Orcas Island

When I arrived at work on Friday we didn’t have any plans for the weekend, but a few hours later I was leaving to load the camping gear and head to Orcas Island for the weekend.

It turns out that my boss had made a camping reservation last summer and was now unable to use it. I called Micha and we decided that since we didn’t have any plans it would be fun to have an unexpected get away.

This was our first trip to Orcas Island and we all had a great time. After a few hours in the car thru Friday afternoon traffic and a ferry ride we arrived at the campground and managed to get the tent set up before it got dark.

Saturday we spent some time exploring the island. Moran State Park has lots of trails and we took the kids for a hike in the morning. After lunch we drove up to the top on Mt Constitution, at just over 2400 feet. The view was just incredible and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Sunday we took another hike, this time around the lake. The hike is just under 3 miles and Andy did did great but started to give up about half way around, so I left Micha and the boys at the playground and did the final mile just me and the dog.

The reservation was for three nights, so we got to stay Sunday night as well, meaning that I got a three day weekend. This morning we packed up and headed back to catch the ferry to the mainland. Overall it was a great weekend away and the kids just loved camping. We’ll have to make it a point to camp a few more times this summer.

Here are a few photos I took.
